Hello everyone!
Hope you’re all feeling nice and warm.
This weeks sees a return to normal and by normal I mean the dizzying heights of April where theatres were live streaming from their empty stages. This time around there seems to be a bit more work that’s new which is exciting. It also seems like British theatres are getting in on the trend with HOME in Manchester streaming their originally planned programme. It’ll be a bit weird, performing to an empty theatre, no audience clapping or joining in but I’m happy these shows are going ahead. I am hoping the next step is that artists start making this with this in mind. What is the dramaturgy of performing to an empty space? Back in the early stages of lockdown, the Deutsches Theater Berlin did something which played off the emptiness of theatres, with such an intricate, delicate sense of the poetics of the past, both in the immediate and distant past. In a production of Hamletmaschine, two actors performed alognside the ghost of the shows director. I’m really gutted I missed it but Holger Syme tweeted about it and sadly the steam is now longer online. I feel like that adds to the allure of it a bit, a spectre haunting the type of streamed theatre I’m desperate to see.
This weeks listing is a mixture of some of the stuff thats live and some stuff thats archived.
I want to encourage curoisity so I’m not going to write about the pieces. I’ll give you a title, form and a picture. If they look good, click the title and check it out!
