Where Did We Sit On The Bus? by Brian Quijada

During a lesson on Rosa Parks, a Latinx kid begins searching for her own people’s place in American history. Performed by a dynamic actress/singer/musician, and infused with a mix of rap, hip-hop, and spoken word, this energetic exploration delves into the experience of growing up in an immigrant family and finding identity in making art.

DEUX focuses on the meeting of two people as an intimate and at the same time precarious endeavour. The imperative of physical distance imposed by the pandemic becomes the playing field for three pas de deux in which the dancers Nina Wollny, Chris Leuenberger and Jenny Beyer invite each other to dance in changing constellations via video conference. They meet each other in a space that is not (yet) shared.
DEUX carefully tests the possibilities that open up when we work together at a distance. When it is not possible to meet in person, the search for connectedness becomes more visible than ever. Why do we need the other ? What does closeness mean right now? What is the value of the empty space between us? The duet partners share solo existence/soloistic moments and are challenged to find new forms of orientation with each other. A new performance space emerges and we, spectators and performers alike, don’t know yet who we will be in that space.

“COBRA BLONDE” steps over the apparent boundaries between two worlds of expression that rarely touch: Traditional German guard dancing and contemporary art. The focus on gender roles within these different scenes lies at the core of this trespassing. Choreographer Reut Shemesh’s project explores the representation of female dancers during traditional carnival festivities and opens a contradictory, almost tragical perspective on this mode of entertainment. Between the prevalent approach in contemporary dance to emphasise individuality and the power of community from which the dance guard draws, an unusual aesthetic emerges, as well as political forcefield. With “COBRA BLONDE”, Reut Shemesh directs the gaze unto a desire for representation of authentic identity – if such a thing can exist at all.

While You Are Here explores the events that unfold over time in one small space; in 2115 past secrets are uncovered, three centuries earlier a couple contemplate their future, someone catches fire and a dream is forever lost. Simultaneously looking at the past, present and future, stories are connected through their location, forgotten incidents ricocheting through the space as generations of humans pass by trying to make sense of life, of death, of time.

Saadet. (meaning happiness) is a video inspired by meditation and psychology apps; it's a cartography of how emotions are perceived and dealt with in the mainstream neoliberal apps, advertisements, and business world. In an imaginary situation, the app is designed in Turkey to give calm and mindfulness(!) to South West Asia (The Middle East), providing guided journaling and AI-driven emotional analysis. The text hovers around the lingo of arms and toy manufacturers, porn websites, and beauty advertisements. In the video, by using the movement vocabulary, and timing of the Bloom App (a cognitive behavioral therapy app) host, Gucci Chunk gives tips on how to feel and manage emotions. By performing computer speech, advertisement, and announcement voice, the performer shifts from self-care, and productivity tips to uncanny advertisements of abdominal control shapewear or vitamins at a schizophrenic speed yet in a calm manner. Moreover, the video dwells on the issues around Westernization, absurdities of nationalism, and (self)Orientalism of the East.
This week, consider donating to Trans Mutal Aid Manchester. If you’ve been to any of the Kill the Bill protest over the past weeks in Manchester, you’ll notice that trans kids are leading the way. These kids are so powerful and amazing and I’m in awe of them. They’ve taken the brunt of the abuses of power the police have been guilty of during these recent protest. Trans Mutal Aid Manchester are a group of trans people in who are creating a fund to provide direct material assistance to members of their community.
The money they raise will be used for things such an healthcare that is not effectively covered by the NHS, e.g. electrolysis, gender-affirmative clothing and makeup, prosthetics, travel costs for appointments, emergency housing, post-surgery recovery costs & legal aid.
