HOME X presented by Chinese Arts Now
free
Thursday 21st until Saturday 23rd October
Audiences enter a virtual world as an avatar that changes and grows as it interacts with this strangely familiar but altered place full of trees, flowers and birdsong. In this virtual world they encounter characters created by the dancers and singer, performing together live using VR technology. No longer either in Hong Kong or the UK, we all exist together in this virtual third space.
Home X explores themes of roots and belonging, destruction and renewal. What happens when you tear up your roots and move away. What is lost and what can be made again? Where, or what is home?
Protect and Survive by Zealtotale X GOBSQUAD
from €7.70
Friday 22nd October
This mixed-media performance, inspired by Audre Lorde explores who we are and why and how we could be. We are taken on a journey by a queen, or is she a goddess? A whore? A high priestess? She is all of these and more. She feels our spirits and reveals to us her manifold identities.
We will build a shelter to protect ourselves, but what are we protecting ourselves from? What are we afraid of? Where is the real danger? If we have learned from Audre Lorde that ‘The master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house’ then what tools might we find to build our shelter? Some say, to survive we need to keep our friends close and our enemies closer. And sometimes to protect ourselves we present our alter-egos to the world, creating a force field around us, wearing invisible armor. What happens when we drop our shield?
Using ritual, poetry and personal narration, three emerging artists from the UK in collaboration with Gob Squad explore the political potential of the multitude of identities and the emotional promise of getting to know ourselves by introducing us to others: ‘I will be deliberate, afraid of nothing. Trust me… Believe in me… I won’t let you fall… Don’t let me fall.’ Maybe, what we need is not a fortified shelter, we need to uncover in order to recover.

“This play was for many years a private conversation with myself. The horrific murders of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa this year have galvanised me into making it public. I hesitate to even call it a play when it is simply a howl, a way of expressing what I feel about a culture of violence against women, but I am sharing it because I wonder if it might express a little of what other people feel about it too. It was written very quickly, and I am grateful to the Royal Court for snatching up a gauntlet thrown down last Friday night with such energy, care and seriousness.“ – Playwright Lucy Kirkwood

A Beginners Guide to Worldbuilding by Lois Alexander & Christoph Winkler
from €7.70
Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd October
You, Need, Go, Search, Find, Take, Return, CHANGE: Through the means of dance, this solo performance takes a look at the methods of world and character building that claim to master the planability of imagination. What happens when they encounter the unpredictable and vulnerable of the moment in a performance?
Science-Fiction and Fantasy are by far the most popular film genres on Netflix & Co. Complex narratives, meticulous storylines and intricate worlds captivate millions of people. But who actually constructs these storylines and builds these worlds? There are many tools and methods for this that claim to engineer our imagination. Sometimes, they take an almost mechanistic approach.
The choreographers Lois Alexander and Christoph Winkler examine these strategies through documentary texts, video snippets and physical materials, focusing especially on the so called “wounding event”. In this process, the workings of human imagination are dissected and woven together into a new live performance that resists the mechanistic.
I’m doing a secret Sunday Morning performance on Tuesday 26th October at 7:30pm and this is all the publicity I’m going to give to it. Respond to this email if you want to come. It’s free btw
